Over 20 years ago, my grandmother passed away. Just a few years ago my grandfather passed away. My grandfather was the type to never let go of the things he owned. One of the rooms in the house (despite having an old termite nest), was still very much alive. With art. With my grandmothers presences.
While she took a journey to the stars, all of her sketches, paintings and books were all left behind. There were acrylic paintings on boards and watercolour artwork. I was able to take about 4 sketchpads full or art, (mostly pencil of the Australian outback).
I knew I wanted to do a series. A way to connect to her. A way to finish what she started. I had the idea many moons ago to do a series of her sketches and turn them into paintings. On the left was on of the loose piece of sketches in the collection. On the right is mine. Using contour sketching, I recreated it.
I asked myself a few questions when I draw this.
What message was she trying to convey in her art?
Did she plan to turn this into a painting?
Why did she create art?
Each one of these sketches started of as an idea, her idea. And I intend to finish them and turn it into a 10 piece collection of acrylic paintings. Hopefully to showcase in a gallery.
